In my previous post, I suggested a way to get locos matched in speed with the aid of a stopwatch and a few distance markers.

In this post I will add an improved method of getting the low speeds correct. Up until yesterday (when I reread part of the manual), I always began the process by adjusting CV2 (start voltage) to get the loco to creep. However, if you use CV116 (kick rate) and CV117 (kick depth) adjusting CV2 is incorrect. According to my NCE manual, "When using Torque Compensation (CV116 and CV117) set the Start Voltage (CV2) to 0 for best operation. And here is their tip for setting up torque compensation:

Start by setting the locomotive speed to 1 on your throttle. Adjust the kick rate (CV116) to 4. Set the kick depth (CV117) to 20 and then adjust this value up or down until the locomotive just barely crawls. When you get fairly good slow speed operation, go back to CV116 and adjust it to 3 or 2 to see if operation improves. 

From here on the procedure for setting the mid-votage and max-voltage are as per described in the previous post.
