Help with Athearn MP15AC with Sound
Posted by gregmc on Saturday, February 9, 2008 8:12 PM

Hello, I am trying to help out a friend here with two Athearn MP15ACs with sound.  One he purchased and another the store loaned him to see if he could figure out his problem with.  He tells me that when he first got the loco, everything seemed to work fine.  He then tried to put it into an advanced consist with his NCE Power Cab.  After that, he was not able to control any motor functions.  He could control his consist but the MP15 would not move with the consist.  He could select on it and control all the functions.

He brought the locomotive to one of our friends house that uses Lenz Set1.  There the locomotive acted like it was in a consist.  We could control functions such as ringing the bell, blowing the horn, and making all the air sound effects.  We could shut it down by pressing F8 three times.  It would start up by pressing any of the functions twice.  We could not control the headlight and we were never able to gain motor control.  We tried zeroing CV19 several times, but did not help.  On a few instances the locomotive would just take off when the throttle was set to full speed.

He brought them to my house this evening and tried them on my layout with a Lenz Set100.  Same response from both units.  No motor control.  No headlight control.  We could blow the horn, ring the bell, shut it down, start it up, mute the sound.  We could use all the functions in both units.  Changing the addresses didn't help.  Clearing CV19 didn't help.  Writing a new value into CV19 didn't do anything.  Nothing would make the motor go.  Once one of the units did take off but when we stopped it, it would not run again.  I am clueless as to what could be the problem here.  Any help would be appreciated.

Typical of the MRC decoders Athearn uses in their sound locos. Lot's of luck with it.  Most folks I know are ripping them out and replacing them with Loksound or Soundtraxx.
