Atlas RSD4/5 Diesel motor repair - brushes and springs
Posted by ChrisVA on Saturday, September 9, 2023 9:33 AM

In trying to add DCC to an Atlas RSD4/5 Diesel (No. 7080), I inadvertently messed up the brush assemblies so that motor is not functioning. I knocked the brush "caps" off and whatever was in the hole underneath is no longer there. I'm assuming that it should be a brush and spring in that hole, but wanted to confirm here?  I did see a mangled spring come out one of them.   My questions are:

How to repair this?

What goes in that hole? Assuming a brush and spring (in that order?), then replacing the brush cap/terminal on it

I found this item on the Atlas website, hoping this is the parts I need?
Chalking it up to a learning experience. Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Chris

Yes. Those are the brushes and springs.

You can shorten the bronze contact strips and solder insulated wires to them.

I think you may need to replace the brush and spring in the brush assembly of your Atlas RSD4/5 Diesel locomotive.
