NCE Powercab cannot read CV
Posted by PRRfan315 on Thursday, September 16, 2021 7:02 PM

Hello, I am new to DCC and am stuck at the beginning.

When I turn on my DCE Powercab, go to program main. I get the message "cannot read CV"

I unhooked the Powercab and hooked up my regular DC controller and the train runs, so it is not the wiring or the track being dirty.

Can anyone offer any other thoughts as to what the problem might be?

Also, the NCE Powercab manual states you should be able to program even if you get this message but I dont see any instructions to do this.

Has anyone had any success programing the train when getting this message?

Thank you

Could be several things.  Some decoders simply don't support read-back, though I think all modern ones do so that's not likely unless it's an older decoder.  Some decoders draw too much current to be read by some systems, and some don't draw enough during reading to be detected.

I believe you just hit "Enter" to go to the next screen.

I don't use a Power Cab, but I have successfully programmed decodes after gettting similar messages with my Digitrax system.

Can't read CVs on the main.  You need the program track menu selection.

I have NCE as well.  That pops up occasionally.   The decoder will still take the programming and will run fine.   Some decoders it either can't read or as said don't have read back ability.    Most of my locomotives are that way.   It is when it doesn't accept programming that there is an issue.   It is recommended to use a program track so one doesn't end up reprogramming all 5e locos to one set of commands.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their replys.

Now for the hard part, after re-reading the set up instructions several times I realized the coiled power cord was hooked up to the PowerCab, not the flat cable.

Once I switched the cables it worked fine. Tongue Tied

Thank you again everyone for the help.
