In Need of A Yard Light
Posted by kenben on Thursday, August 19, 2021 1:30 PM

I'm looking for an HO scale yard light to light up a yard of 5 tracks. Perfer LED adjustable and something that looks realistic. So far I haven't found any good ones that give me enough info. My layout is DCC.

Suggestions?  THX

Hello,

This scene shows an old (Atlas?) yard tower light. They were available with two or four lamps. I replaced the unique incandescent lamps in them with LEDs. Looks like NJ International offers one like it.

This one is a little more work but the results are excellent:

I had to make my own light assemblies and fit them into the relatively "crude" frames supplied with the kit:

The tower is from Alkem Models. There is an eBay seller offering a decent-looking single flood light that wasn't available when I built my tower. I would have used them and will when I make my second one.

What era are you looking at?

My layout is DCC.

That's not important.  You should NOT use your precious DCC power for anything that's not on the rails.  Simple, cheap DC voltage works fine.

Didn't know if that would add any valuable info. My current lighting is Woodland Scenics Just Plug with a few other DC lights I've added. But they all run through my Just Plug network.

Since you are in the modern era these might fit the bill:

They can probably be added to the "Just Plug" wiring once you sort out which wire is + and which is (use an LED tester or a 3V coin battery)

I have purchased from this seller before and they ship from U.S. and seem to be reasonable.

Good Luck, Ed
