I have a bachmann santa fe 4-8-4 northern. It runs ok but after a few seconds of running it gives off a sort of "burning" smell. Does it need to be lubricated or cleaned in some way? I'm not sure

There are many videos out there on working on these motors. He the first one I found in a quick sear:
This guy is working on a GP40, but the motor would be the same.
Once he gets it apart, notice the commutor plate on the back, where the brushes make contact. It's probably really dirty, full of burn brush material, and probably oil.
Most people oil these things way to much. I don't know if this is the best video out there, but it's as good as most.
Good luck.
Mike.
