Volume Control
Posted by cowman on Sunday, December 6, 2020 2:51 PM

Ii know I have seen somewhere the directions to change volume control for both individual sounds (prime mover, bell,  horn) and overall volume, but my inability to see what's right in front of me seems to be working and I can't find it.

I have an Atlas RS-3 with a factory installed ESU Lok Sound Select decoder.  I can find the instructions on how to mute the sound if I want to shut the loco sound down when it is parked on a siding (8), but I cant find the directions to turn the volume down when it is running, either individual or overall. What I want to do is turn the overall volume down.

I'm sure I turned it up when I got  it since I am hard of hearing and have hearing aides, but wanted more sound.  Now my great-grandchildren want to run trains and sound is just too loud forthem and other observers.

I have the original directions that came with the loco, but like I said, it may be right in front of me and I just don't recognize it

Thank you,

Richard

Loksound V5 manuals can be found here:

ESU - Electronic Solutions Ulm GmbH & Co. KG: Digital decoders

Unless they changed since what came with mine a few mons ago, the included instruction sheet from Atlas is for the previous version which had a Loksounf V4. Why Atlas didn't update their getting started sheet is beyond me.

First, I suggest to download the Select "bulletin" for the Atlas RS3 (Alco 244 12 cyl) sound file here.  Print out the "bulletin" to see the horn and bell CV info, including range and default value.  (Horn is CV275 and bell is CV283).  To see the bulletin, click on the blue "Functions" icon on the left, then the "Bulletin" icon on the right.  Here is the link:

Next, I suggest to download the Select "Diesel & Steam Users Manual" to your desktop.  That will come in handy in the future.  No need to print it all out.

ESU - Electronic Solutions Ulm GmbH & Co. KG: Digital decoders

To get to the specifics:

In the Select manual, note on pgs 34-35 that CV63 sets the master volume, which affects all sounds.  The range is 0-192 and your default setting is probably 180.  The prime mover is CV259. The horn and bell as noted above.  Use Program on Main and adjust CVs (master volume, prime mover, horn, bell) and you can immediately hear the change while to loco is moving.  Set the master volume CV63 to a spot that allows you to tweak the prime mover, horn and bell separately.

BE SURE TO NOTE the comment at the bottom of the bulletin: "Make sure that index CV31 is set to 16 and index CV32 is set to 1 before changing a volume CV."  This applies to the prime mover, horn and bell CVs because they are >255, "indexed" CVs.  So set CV31 and CV32 as stated (if not already set there), then select and set those CVs to a setting that provides the result you prefer.  IIRC the CV31/CV32 part does not apply to master volume CV63, since not indexed (you can just adjust CV63 directly at any time).

Thank you both for the replies.  Don't know if I'll have time tonight to figure out just what I need to do to.  It sounds vaguely familiar, but it was quite awhile ago and I am not at all tech savvy.

Thanks again,

Richard
