LED Signals Lights Stopped Working
Posted by kenben on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 7:15 PM

A month ago a bought a 3-pack of HO railroad track signals, 2-lights, LED, green-red from Amazon. Today one of the "green" lights went out; stopped working. Somehow, that also cause a short at that turnout when switched in one direction. I disconnected the signal and the short on the track was gone. It tested the signal and the green light is just not lighting up. I thought LEDs last for a very long time.

Is the green LED bad, brunt out, broken wire inside that can't be seen?? Or just cheap crapy signals? Here is the model number and link to Amazon.

JTD878GR 3PCS Model Railroad Train Signals 2-Lights Block Signal HO Scale 12V Green-Red Traffic Lights for Train Layout New

If this is a crapy product, what do you recommend?

Thanks.

LEDs last a long time, but they do not last forever ... probably just early mortality ...

do you know what voltage you have applied, and what resistors you are running ??

With the green LED not working and a short at the turnout and removing the green wire clears the short there is a problem in the signal.  The green LED is not working because of the short.

Are the signals working on track power or do they have their own power supply? Could there be a problem with the contacts on the switch that change the signal colors or with the wires from the switch to the signal?

How are you driving the LEDs?  Are these Tortoise machines with LEDs in series with the Tortoise power, Tortoises using the auxiliary contacts or are they twin-coils with either extra contacts ala Peco?

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

The signals are powered from the 12V feed that the Tortoise turnouts use. They are not powered by the tracks power. They are connected to the auxillary contacts of the Tortoise.

I tested another signal on the same Tortoise controlled turnout and it works fine.
