Hi everyone,
I'm trying to find out what specific DCC decoder is needed for a N scale Walthers 0-8-0. For more info on this loco MR had a 2008 review that can be found at: https://mrr.trains.com/news-reviews/staff-reviews/2008/01/walthers-n-scale-0-8-0
For this project I just want to convert the engine from DC to DCC operation. Sound capability is not needed. I'd prefer the decoder to be plug and play (if possible), with little or no soldering needed when installed in the tender. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff
Digitrax: DN136PS,DZ123PS. NCE D14SR,D13WP. You'll need to measure how much room you have. Then compare the size of the decoders to get the 1 that will fit. These all have an 8 pin plug. Just remove the jumper plug and plug the decoder into that socket. Remember to line up pin 1 correctly. Joe
Hi Joe, Thanks for the decoder info. Using a magnifier, I was able to find pin one on the plug. I'll probably go with Digitrax DZ123PS as this has just a 1" harness.
Thanks again,
Zimo,
Not often used in USA but probably the best decoder to use for N scale.
Zimo offer extremely small decoder with good current capacity and are well know to offer extremely good performance specially in N scale.
Take care of this model locomotive, because when Atlas acquired Life Like Walthers model including the Proto steam series, the tooling and molds of these beauty have dissappear somewhere in China.
The model of the 0-8-0 will be probably never produced again in N scale.
Given that it's a switcher, I would recommend a TCS decoder for the excellent motor-control. Here is a how-to from the TCS website for their Z2P-VO motor-only decoder:
