HO dwarf signals
Posted by Tophias on Saturday, February 22, 2020 4:09 PM

I'm looking for suggestions for dwarf signals to purchase. I'm going to use them for turnout indicators in my 10 track yard.  They will be wired to Berrett Hill Touch Toggle LED drivers plugged into the Snap Action bases to control Peco switch motors. The signals would be required to be red and green individual led's or a bi-color led.  Regardless, the LED Driver has three inputs (common-red-green).

I was looking at Bear Creek single light with a bi-polar lEd but I think that has just two legs?  Don't really know.  Anyone have any experience that you might share? Thanks all.

on ebay the stands for these signals are pretty cheap, maybe ten cents each, and then add 5mm or 3mm regulat LEDs for another ten cents ??

the stands that i refer to are designed for pcb LED mounting purposes ..

Had a minute and went on ebayto look for dwarf signals ... there was a seller that had relatively complete 3 mm two and three aspect dwarf signals ... they were complete with a wider base and rain shields on the LEDs, they also came with currwnt limiting resistors .. and were about a dollar each [complete]

Ebay also has some ugly dwarf signals, led's on a flat rectangle.  The OP wants 3 lead led's, which most are not.

Try Logic Rail Technologies. Great customer service.

Thanks for the input.  I'm thinking I might try this approach.

Will go to local electronics shop and buy a few 3mm bicolor leds

There are some pretty nice looking HO turnout indicator covers on Shapeways.

Thnx Mel, that looks a great posibility.  I can get an Omni-directional view of the led (view of turnout indication from points end view as well as frog end view) and not too expensive.

Can you post a link, or is that against the forum rules?

I made my own many years ago and lit them with Bidirectional LED's

The original site is http://xdford.freeasphost.net/stag13.html  and you can pick them out here http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=15547&forum_id=21&highlight=Bi+Directional+LED

Mel, I ordered a package of these in black and some 3mm bi-color (bi-polar?) led's and they work great.  I want to thank you for the heads up regarding Shapeways.  I haven't installed any yet, just hooked one up on my work bench.  Because the led's have 3 legs I had to cut/modify the signal a bit to allow the led to slip up into the signal body. I will play with that aspect more before installation.  Again, much thnx for pointing me to Shapeways!

You are welcome sir!  Glad to have been some help.  Do the covers look as good in person as they did on Shapeway?

Yes, I think so anyway.  After being installed you won't be 12" from it anyway.  I most like how the view when I run trains will be Omni-directional, not just one direction of view
