JMRI and windows XP
Posted by ndbprr on Saturday, December 14, 2019 9:46 AM

JMRI manual say's there are problems integrating the two together.  I am running XP Pro and there is no reference for it.  Are they compatible?  What are the problems that occur?  Thank you

The newest Java needed for the newer JMRI does not run on XP, that is the issue.

On the JMRI website there are instructions for installing Java 8 so Windows XP can run the latest versions of JMRI. https://www.jmri.org/install/WindowsNew.shtml

An alternative for an old PC is to remove Windows and upgrade to a Linux operating system.

Remember, "Unsupported" doesn't mean "it won't work". It just means that Oracle (Java) and/or Microsoft (Windows XP) won't provide you any help if you do encounter an issue.

I'm a long-time JMRI user (since late 2002) and have run into this when W95 went out of support, then W98, etc.

Just follow the instructions at the link Peter provided. The Java installer will tell you all sorts of bad things will happen, but it's lying. Just click on the button telling it to continue anyway and all will be well.

You may already know this, but Windows XP (and XP Pro) are long out of support, thus no security patches are available.  I would definitely keep this machine off the Internet.

Amen.  Keep Windows XP machines far far far from the Internet.

Even Windows 7 extended support is going away on Jan 14 2020 (no more updates or bug/security patches for Windows 7 either so those machines need to be upgraded to newer OS or retired from Internet access).

I agree.

JMRI can be downloaded on a protected computer, transferred to thumb drive or CD, and uploaded and installed on the relict computer running XP.

Windows XP needs to go away.  People running XP are the tech equivalent of the nuts who won't vaccinate their children.  They're endangering the herd immunity.

If you don't want to pay for an OS to run JMRI install it on Linux.  If you can learn JMRI you can learn Mint.  I set it up for my mother and she's been using it for years.  And BTW, she calls the "help desk" (me) much less frequently.

I have the right to remain silent.  By posting here I have given up that right and accept that anything I say can and will be used as evidence to critique me.

That would really be the only way you actually want to use a Windows XP (or Windows 7) for anything internet related, as there are as previously mentioned security concerns for those devices. I personnally have never put Linux on anything but I hear it can really speed up an old computer.
