Broadway Limited F9 Hum or Buzzing
Posted by darrel480 on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 7:25 PM

I have an N Scale sound equiped Paragon 2 Broadway Limited F9 that has a hum or buzzing sound only when the throttle is increased (motor starts to run).  The hum stops when the throttle goes to zero and engine motor stops.  All other sounds work fine. This sound is faint but irritating.  I'm using an MRC Prodigy Advance2 system.  Has anyone else experienced this and what may be the problem?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Darrel,

It's probably due to the BEMF (back EMF) set up with the Paragon 2 decoder.  If you turn off BEMF the faint buzzing should go away.  The downside is that you may not get as good motor-control at lower speeds as when the BEMF is engaged.

So you can hear the buzzing over the sound of the Paragon 2 decoder at speed step 001 and >?

Tom thanks for your help. I have the sound turned way down so I hear the hum as soon as speed step 1. The hum stays the same throughout operation until the motor longer is running (speed step 0).  How do I turn the back EMF off?

looking at the manual, I believe you set CV 10 to 0 (from 1)

You may have to monkey around with the kickstart CV 65.   It juices the start up voltage from speed step 0 to step 1.  Range is 0 - 255
