Circuitron AR-2 and DT-4

I recently purchased the AR-2 and DT-4 circuit detection modules.  These require 2 power sources- variableDC throttle power and a 12-18V DC power supply.  Do I also have to have separate DC power supply for the tracks to run the train or will the AR-2 "out" to the tracks run the train?

The way I read the instructions the variable DC is the input to the AR-2 that supplies the track power.  The constant power runs the detection circuit.

I tried that but got no power to the track. I also have no power at the transformer terminals but do when I disconnect the wires from the transformer DC terminals.

I don't have one so maybe I am missing something really obvious.  Sounds like a short is turning off your transformer.

I do believe a short is causing the problem. Anyone know if there should be continuity on the AR-2 between the 2 "out" terminals going to the track when the wires are disconnected???

Call Circuitron. They will answer and they will be able to help you with your problem.

 The instructions that come with the AR-2 show the complete hookup with a DT-4.

There should not be continuity between the two OUT terminals with nothing connected to the IN terminals on the AR-2 and nothing on the track (or with the AR-2 completely disconnected). 

 Wire it EXACTLY as shown in the instructions. The AR-2 IN goes to your power pack, the OUT goes to your track. THe + and - are for the power supply that runs the AR-2 (and DT-4, which has the same + and - terminals). The DT-4 does nto in any way connect to the track. It uses photocells to detect the train.

I did wire as shown in the instructions. To find the short, I disconnected every wire from the AR-2 and tested each connection with an ohmmeter. That's how I found the short between the two out pins going to the track. Sounds like I need a new AR-2.
