Once I start rebuilding my layout, converted for DCC, I’m next looking for a “small” switcher to use in the main yard. I’m currently looking at either a 2-6-0 mogal or a 2-8-0. The 2-8-0 comes with sound, and the 2-6-0 is sound ready, but would require an additional expense to drop in a sound decoder. Any suggestions on these two or possible other steam engines that would be appropriate?
The rest of my roster, at the present, consists of a mallet, a pair of Berkshire’s, and potential of a mikado and another larger engine, a challenger or big boy.
In terms of small steam switchers, you’ve got a lot of options in terms of plastic. I’vd seen Bachmann make a lot of steam stuff, including consolidations and moguls, plus 0-6-0s, 2-6-2s, and 4-6-0, all of which would fit in a small yard operation. Note they are often poor representations of their specific road numbers but if your not picky they will work fine. Model power also makes small steamers in N scale (4-4-0, 2-6-0, etc) but they also lack a lot of detail. If you want a lot of nice detail then I think brass is a good option.
If you like the 2-8-0 and 2-6-0, then I can’t help decide between the two, that’s your choice. Sound ready should be an easy installation, I would think there would already be room for a speaker. The DCC/sound installed 2-8-0 will be easpier but if you like the look of a mogul more don’t be afraid of a little soldering/glueing needed to add a speaker. Milling won’t be nessesary if it’s sound ready.
