Electrical spike
Posted by wblock on Monday, July 17, 2017 2:25 PM

Recently, while I was out of the house, I believe we had an electrical spike. I say I believe because there were a few indications, but most devices were not affected.

When I attempted to start my layout, most of my DCC engines would not run. I found that if I selected them individually, rather than by recall, they operated. I have an NCE system by the way.

But there are two I cannot get to run at all. One, inparticular, will operate its headlight intermitently, but does not tun even if I use the same method and select it individually.

Does this mean the decoder is ruined or is there anything I can do to revive it? I am very much an electrical novice.

  Thanks.

Any decoder issues I do a decoder reset. Cycle track power after the reset and the headlight should flash about six seconfs later, I think about sixteen times.

I do, CV8, enter 8. Cycle track power. The loco should respond to address 3.

You might consider a battery backup. Amazon sells them and free shipping even as much as they weigh. They also sell replacement batteries.

Lower cost ones usually have modified sine wave.

More expensive ones have pure sine wave.

I have a couple of them for electronics in the house.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
