I do remember some suggesting the MRC Control Master 20 for walkaround.

I use a Stapelton throttle powered by an MRC Controlmaster 20.  Good speed control and lots of power.  I often run trains with doubleheaded steam, plus a pusher, and no power issues even on the grades.  I've also run over a dozen locos at once (to entertain the grandkids) and throttle response is as good as it is with only one loco running....plenty of power.

You can also search ebay for DC walk around throttle. I just did. I see a some for around $40.00 or so.

The Varipulse walkaround for around $40.00 plus shipping.

I have a mrc controlmaster 20 which is about 10 years old worked great until today. When you turn it on the engine goes flying down the track. Now when you turn it on is the power indicator light supposed to come on a bright green or is supposed to be dull then get brighter as  the speed is turned up?

Thank you

Mine comes on bright.  It also came with a walkaround throttle, but the momentum feature (not something I especially care for, anyway) never worked properly.  The Stapleton throttle offers much better control and you can adjust the momentum to whatever level you prefer.  It does, however, cause some motors to be a bit noisy at low speeds.

I use CMI Super Blue DC transformers which have walkaround throttles. I have had mine since the 1990s and they work great. You might find them on ebay. They are out of production but the same product is made by USA trains.  http://www.usatrains.com/usatrainspowerpacks.html

Another option which should be considered is from MRC which is the leader in DC train transformers. MRC Throttlepack 9900 and matching remote handheld controler MRC 1325.

I'm curious.....does the engine go flying down the track with the throttle plugged in and also when it is Not plugged in? It should not with the throttle unplugged. I have three MRC 20's since the early 90's and have not had any problem's with any of them.....had to replace a throttle once, but had a spare, but no power went to the track at all without the throttle. The one's I have are the units without the fan.

Good Luck!Big Smile
