hello all -
its been A while since I posted. Anyways, ive been having issues with some of my p2k fleet of geeps. (Gp7/Gp9). The primary problem has come from units that are pre-Walthers (cracked axles). Can athearn gear sets still be ordered?
the other more vexing problem has to do with a newer model from 2010. It's a gp9 and has a strange lighting issue. All my power is still in the dark ages (DC, not DCC. I'm converting soon) And this unit has LED diode ditchlights installed in addition to the factory directional lighting. Half the time, the lighting is completely dead.
anyone else have lighting issues in newer p2k engines?
cheers :)
The cracked gears can be replaced with Athearn gears, it's the ones for the 6 axle units, so you get 6 gearsin a pack.
For the one with the wonky lights - when you put in a decoder, just remove the factory light board and associated junk and wire the lights to the decoder. Then you will be sure you have the right light connected tot he right function wire and once programmed it will work as intended.

Are the ditch lights factory installed or did a previous owner install them? If I recall correctly a previous Geep discussion, ditch lights came well after the GP hay day.

Any ideas for pre-decoder installation? Not quite ready yet.

I'm modeling a short line - all of the power is prototype based and fitted with custom details. An HO scale modeling service installed the ditchlights. (Micro electronics are not my strongest area).
This is an old GP9 that I added a Tsunami decoder to. I had to remove a lot of metal weight from the inside of the engine. I custom built the speaker enclosure out of white styrene so I could fit it in at the left in this picture.
No, it's not pretty, but it works and with the shell on you can't see how it looks inside. This was done quite a few years ago, so you can probably find both decoders and speaker enclosures to make the job easier now.
