Info wrt using Digitrax PR3XTRA
Posted by doublereefed on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 10:59 PM

Greetings,

I'm new to DCC, many of you helped me on a separate thread regarding a loco that stopped working correctly, the help much appreciated.

It was recommended that I get a Digitrax PR3XTRA for setting up locomotives with regard to sound, power, and CV values.  I've read the info on the site, and watched a few YouTube videos. I have a Mac and would be using the JMRI software.

I have a small switching layout, about 3' x 16'. I don't have room to really set up a programming station with the Mac, etc. I'm using an NCE Power Cab to run my layout.

What I'd like to do is just set up a portable board with 3' of track that I could program engines on and run them up and down a bit. If I just plug the PR3XTRA into my Mac, and then use the track leads to the track, will I be able to use the JMRI software cab to run the engine on my 3' track? I'm pretty sure I will be able to see all the settings... just wondering if the PR3XTRA will also power the track sufficient to actually run the locomotive. Like a 3' self-contained DCC layout.

Thanks in advance,

-Richard

No, the PR3 can't run locos, it does nto put out enough power to run the motor.

A self contained device that can program pretty much anything AND run trains with the JMRI throttle is the SPROG. There's also a higher power version that actually has a greater output power than the PowerCab, but your only throttles would be on screen JMRI throttles or using a smartphone and WiThrottle or Engine Driver wirelessly.

I did a bunch more reading and researching... since I'm on an NCE PowerCab setup already I think my best way to go is to get their USB Interface. It looks like that will allow me to use JMRI to program the locos and then also give me the cab controls including WiThrottle. Given my tight workspace, I will just have to set up a temporary way to set the Mac near the railroad when I need it.

doublereefed:

If you get yourself a second Power Cab Power Panel (part # 5240222) you would be able to mount that to your 3' test track and take your track and the Power Cab to your computer. You will still need the USB interface.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Ah! Now we're talking! Makes total sense given that all the DCC "smarts" are in the PowerCab handheld. Thanks!
