Bachmann DDA40X prime mover sound stops
Posted by fieryturbo on Friday, December 25, 2015 12:48 PM

So I got a Bachmann DCC Sound Value DDA40X for Christmas, and I found it has an extremely annoying trait: It shuts off the prime mover sound when it isn't moving.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this behavior?

Thanks!

P.S. I also cross-posted on Bachmann's forums.

Hi.

Are you running the DDA40X on DC or DCC?

All the best.

If DCC is used, can you read/write CVs?What's the value of CV116?

Using a Digitrax PR3, I wasn't able to read the Bachmann decoder values.  (It only seems to work properly with the Digitrax decoders) My Roco DCC booster doesn't have feedback through xpressnet.

Forum protocol, you should sign your name.

I just looked at the Bachmann HO scale forum and nothing about a DDA40X. There are company reps and users of Bachmann products there.

I see questions from some who use Digitrax DCC.

Dunno, my PR3 reads all kinds of decoders just fine. In fact I don't have a single Digitrax decoder at all. I used to have a Tsunami, it could read that.

One thing - never try to read the whole decoder in one go with JMRI, it's too many CVs to read on a sound decoder and takes WAY too long, and too much room for error. Skip all the junk and try reading JUST the CV in question. Also, don't use a lot of thin wire to the program track. I have manybe a foot of fairly heavy 18 guage speaker wire between the PR3 terminals and SOLDERED to a piece of flex track. And make sure the piece of track is clean.

Just an update, when I turn off auto-notching, this problem doesn't occur.  But I want auto-notching!  I still think this is a decoder programming issue.

You need JMRI to read non Digitrax decoders. It's free from JMRI web site.  Joe

Enter CV116=39 (default),turning on track power should start the prime mover sounds wich will increase with throttle then return to "idle" when throttle is "0".Clicking "E-Stop" once will trigger diesel shut-down sequence.

Yeah, you know, I think there may be some issue with that.  I will try out DecoderPro (instead of the Digitrax SoundLoader I usually use with the PR3 out of habit.)  I already have JMRI installed on the workstation I do the decoder programming on.  Thanks for the tip.

Hey, thanks, I'll try that out tonight.
