MRC 1510 USB Wireless device and JMRI
Posted by WardR on Thursday, December 3, 2015 10:02 AM

Hello Fellow Modlers,

I have an MRC prodigy wireless system and also the wirless USB interface ( 1510)  attached to a pc that worked with the MRC software, I recently asked MRC tech support if that device would work as an interface with the JMRI app and they said yes, i have not tried yet, but the JMRI app only has an option for Serial, simulator or none. I assumed i would need a wired device to attach to my mrc system via serial, but they said no, does anyone know if this will work wiuth what i have and if so, what should i choose as my conection?

thank you for any input any one has on this.

Most usb to dcc bus innterface devices emulate a serial port when plugged in.

My suggestion would be to simply go to the JMRI home page, click on "Supported hardware", scroll down the list to "Model Rectifier Corp (MRC)", and click on the link for the "MRC system page".

had already went to that page, appears the 1510 wireless is supported it says it was tested with the wirless, but it also says to select a serial port, theres no option for wireless.

Ward,

I don't think you'll see a wireless selection. Wireless will be part of your MRC command station's capabilities. First you have to talk to the command station, so for that part, as was already mentioned, you'll most likely need to choose "serial" given that the USB device most likely emulates that form of communications.

Note you may have a choice of baud rates. NCE uses 9600, but consult the MRC manual or the MRC device's manual to check you've got the settings right.

Once you choose "serial" then SAVE and let JMRI reboot. When it comes back up, you should be good. You'll be in comm with the MRC command station and it will implement the wireless for you just like it does now.

Note you may have a choice of baud rates. NCE uses 9600, but consult the MRC manual or the MRC device's manual to check you've got the settings right.

For many of the native USB interface device such as the MRC devices, Digitrax PR3, LocoBuffer-USB, etc. no external baud rate setting is needed or recommended.

You usually only have to be concerned about the baud rate when you're using an interface device or command station with a serial (9-pin, RS232) port.  That is generally true even if you're connecting to that device using a USB to Serial adapter because, well, it's a USB to Serial adapter.

The NCE PowerHouse/PowerPro falls into that category, as does the easyDCC and a possibly few others.

It's all spelled out on the JMRI "Supported hardware" pages I referred to earlier.
