Loksound Issues (no prime mover)
Posted by Renegade1c on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 9:12 PM

We guys I installed a LokSound Select decoder for an EMD 645E3. I have everything working except sounds for the prime mover. The locomotive runs, plays the horn bell and every other sound except the prime mover. I am really stuck with this one.

Any Suggestions?

I check the sound volume level and that doesn't seem to be it. It's almost if the sound file is missing all together.

Any Help would be appreciated.

This is only the second Loksound decoder I have. I wanted to try it out as I have been a long time Tsunami user and figured I would try this one out.

I do like the sounds so far but its really annoying not having the primemover work

Renegade1c:

The Loksound is a little different in that the prime mover sound does not come on automatically. You have to press F8 to get the engine sound.

I hope your problem is that easy to solve.

That was the first thing I tried both on my layout and with the sprog. I still get no prime mover with F8 on or off.

Too bad it wasn't that easy to solve. I should have given you more credit.

My suggestion would be to call Loksound.

Hope it works out, and I hope it doesn't turn you off Loksound.

Dave,

Thank you for your input. I will probably end up calling them.

Are you using the LokSound Select users manual available to download from their site.  It describes in the text pages how to adjust any prime mover selection options (and wether a higher level CV needs to be set first). I'd do a reset also.

Do any of y'all know ( I have been in Texas too long...) if a reset wipes out the sounds downloaded to the decoder (In other words will I have to borrow a Lokprogrammer to upload them)? I know that it does wipe out the function map (including how the sounds are used). I have already written the current function map so I can rebuild it and assign different sounds to their particular functions.

Thank you all for your help.

It shouldn;t - there were some OEMs not setting the correct check box in the Lokprogrammer software to make their customizations the default, but Loksound instructed all those vendors on how to do things correctly. The sounds won;t get wiped, what woud get messed up are that teh sounds played based on various F keys would get changed back to the ESU default if the OEM's customization would be lost.

SInce it currently is not working, you really can;t make it any worse doing a reset.

I'm only 99 percent sure you can reset it (CV8 = 8, then power off and on) and the sound file will remain, so I'd call them before doing that. (I may try one of mine).  Otherwise one could not do a reset unless owning the LokProgrammer.

Anyway, I'm curious so looking at a few things.  First, do you have the EMD 12-645E3 file specifically, shown on this page?

http://www.esu.eu/en/downloads/sounds/loksound-select/loksound-select-usa/

EDIT: The F40PH file (see next post) is also on that page.  It describes only one prime mover, "turbocharged EMD 645E3 V16 cylinder, two-stroke Prime mover".

If so, it does not mention multiple prime mover sound files for that one.  What I don't know (assuming the description is up to date) is if that means the first (of four) prime mover slots is the only one loaded, or whether all 4 (potential) prime mover slots have the same prime mover sounds.  I'm referring to CV48, covered on pgs 33-34 of the Select manual.  Note that CV48 determines what selections are made for the horn (see pg 32), prime mover, bell rate and brake squeal choice, by summing the appropriate values for each desired selection.  CV48 should be the sum of the desired selections covered on pgs 32-35.  The default (in the back of the manual) for CV48 is 3, which means the horn is a Nathan P3 (value of 3), the prime mover is slot / Selection #1 (add 0 to CV48), the bell rate is slow type (add zero for this) and the brake squeal is Selection 1 (add zero again), thus the sum = 3 for these defaults.  So (assuming you can read CV values from the programming track) I suggest seeing if you can read CV48 and determine what that says about the prime mover Selection included, which adds 0, 16, 32 or 48 to needed figures for the horn, bell rate and brake squeal.  So if you have not changed the horn type, bell rate and brake squeal, CV48 should be 3, unless you changed CV48 for a different prime mover slot.  Again, if you selected another slot, maybe prime mover slots 2, 3 and 4 are empty. Or maybe they load the same sound in all 4.  Another possibility I could see would be if a shipper sent you a bare bones Select and neglected to add your sound file.  But the fact that you have a horn makes me suspect a prime mover's sounds would be there also(?).

BTW, I'm assuming that when a specific sound file is loaded to a new Select, that adds the desired prime mover(s) sounds, but the manual suggests the CV48 default is always 3, which means the horn, bell rate and brake squeal is the same for any sound file.  It would make more sense to me if the most appropriate horn were also selected, which would mean the CV48 value would be anything from 0-15 (different horn values).  Just a side issue of interest, but off track from your problem.

Also, check (read) the value for CV259 diesel sound volume (see pgs 34-35.  If that's at zero for some reason, that particular sound is zero.  CV259 default is 99, not sure if max is 255 or less. (For example, CV63 master volume max is 192).  Note in those pages that since CV259 is above 256, to write it you need to first set index register CV32 = 1, before writing higher number CVs such as CV259.  Unlike master volume CV63, which can be set directly.

Let us know what you find out!

The one I actually have is for the F40PH (even thought that is not what it is going into) Luckily it uses the same prime mover as a GP-40.

I will perform the reset tonight and see what happens. I will also check all the CV's you mentioned above.

Thanks guys. I will keep you all updated.

You can do a reset on the Loksound without losing the sound files. I've done it several times.

Well guys. I did a factory reset on the decoder and everything seems to be working now. I didn't even have to rebuild the function map. This was an aftermarket decoder and not one preinstalled. I did the reset, reset the address and all is now working.

Thank you all for your help!

Well in this process I think i figured out what is wrong. It wasn't the decoder after all. I put the locomotive on my sprog to program it but when I move it over to the digitrax layout it immediately spools up the prime move to notch 8 and stays there.

F8 does nothing on the digitrax layout. If I remember correctly there was a firmware update to the DCS100 to add functions past a certain point. I am wondering if I need to get that done since mine is from 1996 and hasn't been updated at all.

Everything works just fine when i am running it on the sprog (much newer than the DCC system)

Edit: I just found an article on Digitrax' site saying that a booster without access to functions 9-12 does some strange stuff to BLI locomotives. I think it might be time for my DCS100 to head to florida (its only 19 years old).

I ended up disabling manual notching and F8 mute command. The lack of functions 9-12 on the command station was causing the issue. I need to get the command station updated.
