N Scale - Motor Magnetic Field Vs Speaker Magnetic Field? Any Problems?
Posted by PatrickM on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 1:41 PM

Hello All,

I have been installing my LokSound decoders in my N Scale locos, so the decoder
in most cases is at the front top of the loco frame, and the speaker is at the top
rear of loco frame, with no problems thus far.

I am preparing another install, but this time it appears that the speaker will fit
nicely into the fuel tank area, bottom of the loco, but when I place the speaker
there, it starts fighting with the motor magnets.

I am wondering, does anyone know if this will cause any issues with either the
motor working properly or the speaker functioning properly? This would be a great
place to install the speaker, but I want to make sure these magnetic fields are
not going to cause issues before I go milling out the fuel tank area on the frame.

Any help, input, and/or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

The magnet on a speaker of that size will cause no adverse effects to the motor. Kato installed speakers in their fuel tanks of a much larger size that you will ever use with no problems.

Conversely, if anything, the motor magnets may help increase the magnet's strength in the speaker without any additional mass.

Myself, I can't use any engines that generate a strong magnetic field in the fuel tank area as it will trip the reed switches mounted between the rails to activate my signalling system ! Even the motors alone in Proto engines are too strong for my system .... but that's another thread ....
