I run my layout with DCC, only. I realize that to run DC you must shut off the DCC, but what about the engines that have decoders in them? Do they have to be removed from the layout or moved to a dead track?

Not entirely true. Some DCC Command Stations allow you to run one DC locomotive. I have a Digitrax Zephyr Xtra, which allows me to run one DC loco, what command station do you have? Check the operators manual.

Not necessary, most decoders are "dual function" and allow DC/DCC use. However, I disable the analog (DC) feature in CV 29 on my decoders. What brand are you using?

Shutting DCC off isn't enough,you must disconnect the command station (either plug or switch) so that DC doesn't get to it.
Decoders shouldn't get damaged by DC,however many newer "Dual mode" decoders will have the locos moving like any DC engines.They let DC go through to the motor to allow DC running.
