DCC in Steam
Posted by oldnewby on Sunday, March 15, 2015 8:06 PM

There are so many configurations of steam engines. Is there a place to look for instructions on installation sound in DCC steam

Welcome.

Too general a question. Too many possibilities.

 There is no one book.

Google has helped me a lot to find installations for specific locos. I have been able to find quite a few installation pictures. You Tube, many post the loco running but not to many post installation videos.

Some locos, a decoder with 9 pin is needed. Some an eight pin decoder.

Some decoders come with wire leads for hardwire install. Some with an eight pin plug, some with a 9 pin connector.

 Google loco of choice.

Non sound "sometimes" are fairly easy for diesel and steam. Sound can be a different issue.

Do a bunch of research if you are new to DCC.

SoundTraxx has a few installations for locos but sound decoders.

TCS has non sound and some sound installs.

I have seen some here and the Bachmann forums.

Some locos might not be DCC ready for a decoder if you have older DC locos.

http://www.soundtraxx.com/choose/step1.php

This is alink to Soundtraxx decoders. Click on the scale you have and the manufacturer. The locos highlighted in blue have instuctions. Although this is for Soundtraxx, the install will be the same for any sound decoder of the same type. You can look at different instructions to see how it's done.I know some locos have a space in the bottom of the tender for a speaker. This makes it easier for sound.Look at the bottom of the tender to see if it has small holes in a circular pattern. If so, it has a place for the speaker in the tender. I assume the locos you have already have DCC or are DCC ready. If not, this is  a tricky install as you needto run wires from the loco to the tender. Hope this helps.  Joe

The easiest thing to do is tell us the make and model of engine and the decoder you're thinking of.  Someone here has probably done one, or something similar.

TCS is a fairly new player with sound decoders. They are building this page as they do new installs.

99% of modern steam put a decoder socket in the tender.  Just take the tender shell off and see if there is a circuit board in there.

I've put sound in everything from 0-4-0T to 2-8-8-2 H7 Brass
