Intermountain dual mode?
Posted by Missouri Pacific BNSF on Thursday, January 22, 2015 9:38 PM

I have a combination of 3 newer intermountain es44ac and sd70ace locomotives with factory dcc in the es44ac and factory dcc with sound in the 2 sd70ace's.  My question is are these locomotives dual mode DC and dcc compatible as they sit from the factory? If not what is needed to allow them to operate on a DC layout?

Yes, IF CV 29 is set for DC operation, they should run okay that way, but you won't have any control over the sounds.

I have not done anything except program the engine to its road number, not having modified any cv values, will cv29 need to be changed from the factory setting?

Some DCC systems automatically disable the dual mode (DC or DCC) capability of a decoder when its address is programmed.  If your DCC system does, you will be able to use only DCC. You will have to program CV 29 to to run the locomotive using DC or DCC. Refer to the decoder documentation CV 29, bit 2.  You will read under basic situation, program CV 29 to 6.

When you changed the locomotive address, CV29 was changed, but is most likely set to still run on DC power.

Simple answer:  Put the locomotive on the track and see if it will run on DC power.
