N-Scale Bachmann 44-Ton Decoder Conversion
Posted by kelleywpns on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 6:33 PM

All

I'm thinking about swapping the stock Bachmann decoder in this model.  I've read on other forums about swapping either a TCS MZA4 or Digitrax DZ123M0 for the stock decoder (both claims say it's almost a perfect swap).

Anyone here had an experience with either of those decoders with this model?
Thanks

Mike

you can also ask at the Bachmann N scale forum. Bachmann reps there also.

I use a Digitrax system but have never really been a fan of their decoders. The newest ones are supposed to have some serious improvements in the BEMF, but the DZ123 is not one of those new ones. The new ones also have improvements in the lighting effects to work better with LEDs.

I've been using TCS decoders for motor only decoders for quite some time. They have excellent BEMF, and they have adjustments built in so the lighting effects can work equally well with LEDs and incandescent bulbs. I've been happy with TCS, so I haven't had a reason to even try one of the newer updated Digitrax decoders.
