Need help understanding playable horn info on Digitrax SFX006
Posted by Gerome on Friday, November 28, 2014 7:40 PM

I have been using Soundbug SFX 004 for some time.  Now have a SFX 006

However, I do not understand the following from the manual:

Each diesel scheme can be configured with one of 8 different horns using CV150 and one of 4 different bells using CV157. To enable playable volume for your selected horn or whistle add 128 to the selected value (ex. Playable volume on horn 2 is enabled with a value of 130, 02+128=130)

Horn/Whistle Setup (Default=0, Playable Horn=1, Alternate Horn=2 +128 for playable volume.)

Range

00-07

or 128-

135

Ques: 1. What values for CV 150 do I enter to change horns from one to another? 00 to 07 I guess.

2. But what is an alternate horn?
3. And what is playable volume and does it apply only to alternate horn?
Thanks for any tips.

There can be UP TO 8 Horns in a sound project. 0 is the default set by the designer of the project, 1-7 are the alternates. 128-135 are the playable versions of these.

For Digitrax, you need a DT400 or DT402 throttle. Built in to the keypad is a pressure sensor for the F2 button, which needs to be enabled in the throttle configuration. If it is enabled, you can see on the throttle that the bar graph along the top that indicates speed will vary with the amount of pressure you use on the F2 button. If the decoder supports a playable whistle, it will vary with the differing pressure on the button.

for NCE, if you have the right firmware in your system, you control the whistle by scrolling the speed wheel while holding down the whistle button.

I don't think any of the other systems support this feature. If they do, I havent seen the procedure to use it.

Thanks, Randy.  Yes, I use a Zephyr and a DT402.  But what do you mean the whistle will vary with the pressure.....do you mean the volume will vary with the pressure on F2?

Yup. You may have to turn it on, go through the throttle setup menu, I forget what it says, but it will be in the DT402 manual. Then the whistle will vary with how hard you press the F2 button. It actually is a different type of button on the inside so it is pressure sensitive. All but the very first DT400's have it as well - long before any decoder was made that could use the feature. Long term thinking from AJ at Digitrax.
