Bachmann. GG-1 sound question
Posted by karle on Thursday, October 30, 2014 8:13 PM

Out of the box under dcc this loco has no traction motor sound, it is dead silent. All the other sounds work, bell, horn, blower, when manually activated. I know this is an electric loco, but I would think you would still hear the motors wind up and down as the throttle is increased and decreased. is there supposed to be sound as the trottle is changed? Is a cv posibbly not set from the factory? Thanks for any help.

Don't have one but all the advertising says, prototypical motor sound. The Bachmann website, which you should have, has the CV list. SoundTraxx has the Bachmann CV list also.

I have one, and the motor sound isn't obvious.  I've cranked up that CV, too, and still hear nothing.

If you read the enclosed pamphlet, it does mention that the prototype had a reputation as a "widowmaker" because it ran so quietly that track crews sometimes did not hear it in time to get out of the way.

I have not heard the Bachmann model, but the only motor noise you could really hear on a GG1 was the rushing air of the blower motors that provided cooling air to the traction motors.

Based on actual observation of my Bachmann GG-1:

F1 is bell

F2 is horn long

F3 is horn short

F4 is releasing air

F5 is blowers

F6 is steam generator

F7 is dimmer for headlight

F8 is mute

Since this is an electric engine, there is no diesel prime mover to revv up or down.

Never heard a GG-1 in real life, but I've heard plenty of electric engines and the main thing tends to be the blowers whining.

I wouldn't expect them to have sound effects for the traction motors any more than they would have the same on a diesel engine.

I am sure there are more sound effects that could be included, but this is a sound value decoder, so I expected the selection to be a bit limited. Kinda doubt Bachmann went out and made a bunch of recordings just for this project.

Bachmann told SoundTraxx what to put in for sound. Bachmann does not program decoders. Bachmann and SoundTraxx sites have the CV list of sounds. Rather common knowledge.

Check out any of the videos on YouTube for GG1's with Loksound decoders - they have an electrical motor type sound when moving. (?)

So do the QSI ones (Broadway). It's not loud, and indeed unless you mess witht he volumes, the vent fans will overpower the traction motor sounds, but this is as it should be. A Broadway GG1 was the first sound loco my ex father in law bought, and he thought it sounded pretty much like what he remembered rolling by when he worked in the yard at Coatesville PA.

For someone expecting 'big train sounds' this is probably NOT the loco to get - the were pretty quiet in real life as well.

For those who did not read all the messages or Google the GG1 sounds.  Some only read the OP's message and never look at any reponses.

Ok folks thanks for the answers. I guess we conclude there was little if any sound . I too cranked up the motor Cv and hear nothing. So either soundtraxx didnxt include it or there really was no sound.

On the other hand, I just love that horn.  Headphones It's music to my ears.
