Help. I can't get manual notching to work
Posted by dangailer on Monday, June 30, 2014 6:13 PM

Hi Everybody,

I recently picked up an Athearn Genesis SD70ACe with a tsunami sound decoder. I have tried to set up manual notching but it hasn't worked and I am not sure why. The last thing I did was a factory reset to ensure I hadn't changed a CV by mistake then changed the following CVs

  • Set the long address to the cab
  • changed CV 128 (the master volume) to 50
  • changed CV 116 to 0 (this should have enabled manual notching)
  • changed CV 112 to 3 (I think this set the radiator fan noise and compressor sounds to happen automatically)

According to the manual, these steps should have allows the use of Function 9 to increase the engine speed and Function 10 to decrease it however these function now have no effect.

Has anyone had this problem before and how did you solve it?

Thanks for your help,

Dan

Athearn's factory installed Tsunami decoders are short legged versions that lack features true Tsunami decoders have...manual notching is likely one of them.CV's are there but will accept only limited reprogramming.

I've never heard that one. Care to share where you came up with that? Don't confuse Bachmann's "Sound Value" with others. The manual that came with my Athearn Genesis SD70ACe with factory installed Soundtraxx Tsunami states it has FULL capability, and so does my Intermountain ES44AC with Soundtraxx Tsunami. Both locos are HO scale.

The Athearn manual ....

http://www.athearn.com/Content/Support/quickStart.html

.... indicated that manual notching IS an option, but in the chart, it lists F9 as brake squeal / release and F10 as coupler. (?)

However, in this Athearn linked manual ....

http://www.athearn.com/Content/Support/usersGuide.html

It indicates - To use Manual Notching, set CV 116 to 0. Then, the engine RPMs will ncrease by one notch each time Function 9 is pressed. Similarly, the RPMs can be decreased using Function 10. Unlike Automatic Notching, pressing Emergency Stop will reduce the engine speed to idle. Once the engine is idling, you shut it off by pressing Function 10. When manual engine notching is selected, both the radiator fans and air compressor sound effects will no longer be controlled by F9 and F10. Instead, they can be configured to turn on automatically whenever the engine sound is playing with CV 112 (See Radiator Fans and Air Compressor Control).

This manual, however, indicated F9 and F10 as being un-assigned.

And lastly, from the Soundtraxx Trouble-shootong page ....

http://www.soundtraxx.com/support/tips.php

Manual notching isn’t working

  • Make sure bit 0-3 are set to a value of 0 in CV 116 and CV 112 is set to 3, then activate rpm+ via F9 and rpm- via F10

Somebody else here apparently had the same problem ....

Doesn't appear as though it was rectified in the thread. (?)

Found this on the Yahoo Group ....

In DecoderPro, go under the advanced TAB and change "Function Group 2 and 3 Exchange" to normal.

By default Athearn have the F5-F8 swapped with F9-F12. Setting CV30=0 will set the swap to normal. Then setup the mapping to your choice.

They do this for people that haave only 8 function throttles.

I own only true Tsunami decoders (KT1000 & AT1000) so I don't have these problems. However,I always read whatever info I stumble upon on different forums and it is not the first time I read about Athearn's factory installed Tsunamis, not confusing with Bachmann's Sound Value decoders.Where exactly I read this...sorry...didn't take note.

What dcc system are you using? I didn't think manual notching was working on my engine until I found out you have to double tap the button for it to work on a nce power cab.

This worked for me, hope it helps.

This will achieve manual engine notching, dynamic brakes override to drop engine to idle, manual brake control. Radiator fans and compressor on auto.

Here are the CV's.

CV43 - 8

CV44 - 32

CV45 - 64

CV46 - 128

CV 116 - 80

CV112 - 3

For F11 braking - CV3 - 25, CV4 - 50, CV61 - 153 These can be adjusted to your liking.

Sorry for not doing this sooner.

Martin.
