Cool.  I wonder how it knows when the couplers make contact.  Or do you have to trigger that by yourself?

A novelty that gets irritating very quickly -- and nothing really new.  The BLI car with chicken sounds came out several years ago.

I wouldn't mind a few cars with sound to round out the train sounds.  Yeah, yeah....I get it...it doesn't scale very well, or the tiny speakers and enclosures don't have the dynamic range or bass response needed to make it 'truly' realistic...as if our toy trains are ever 'realistic'.   For my own purposes, while I appreciate the sounds a scale locomotive can supply, there's nothing trailing that makes the flange squeal or the joint thunking.  No flat tires.

Didn't Athearn make mechanical refrigerator cars with sound not too long ago?

I would consider it for special cars that make some distinctive sound.

MRH has a post on this as well. Aztec has HO 57' mechanical refers with a battery powered sound unit. I believe these are Athearn units. I assime these decoders will need their own address and the sounds will be user triggered. In a refer or box car, you can add a bigger speaker because you don't have the inside filled with a motor and weights.   Joe
