Preview LokSound sound files
Posted by Omaha53 on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 10:34 AM

I am considering LokSound decoders for some of my locomotives and I would like to listen to the sound files before I purchase any. I have downloaded some of their sound files and the LokProgrammer but it appears that the only way to hear the sound is to upload it to a decoder. Is there any other way to just listen to the sound files?

I did download some files and opened them in the LokProgrammer. But from what I see the only way you can hear them is to then upload them to a decoder. I do not see a way to just listen to the sound file on the computer's speakers. I know that they would sound somewhat different but I would give me an idea. Am I missing something?

The sound samples are right on the website within the description of each file.

. I do not see a way to just listen to the sound file on the computer's speakers.

I guess it would sometimes be simpler if the respondees to a question would just post the link rather than just say "you can find it at".

If you are speaking of Select decoders, here is the link to the file page: http://www.esu.eu/en/downloads/sounds/loksound-select/loksound-select-usa/

You will see at the bottom of the body of the descriptions something that says "sound sample/functions".  If you click there you should get a little slider bar that opens up and you should be able to hear the sound sample.  Note that not every descriptive paragraph seems to have a sample available.

I didn't provide a link because the OP was already two inches away from the sound sample when he downloaded the sound file - so he already knows where it is !  Smile, Wink & Grin

Thank you very much for the link. Part of my problem was that I was most interested in the first item on the list (EMD 16Cyl 645E3) and it does not have the sound sample. I did not look down the list and see that most of the items do have samples.

Correct, there is no sound sample for that one yet. However, there is a way for you to play it in the programmer. First, download the V4.0 version of the file - not the Select version. It is the first one in the V4.0 US section.

Open this file in your programmer. and click on SOUND in the left hand column. you will get a sound project overview page. You will have the page divided into four sections. The upper left contains all the sound slots. Single click on Soundslot 1 to highlight it.

Now, in the top toolbar, on the left, click on Sound Slot Simulation. You will hear the engine start up and settle to an idle. To the far right of that same toolbar, there will be a box with a "0" in it and an arrow for a dropbox.

Click on that dropbox arrow and it will present you with a slider control. Use this slider control to represent a throttle. This will allow you to run the engine yourself up and down through the notches !

This process will work with any of the V4.0 files, which are identical to the Select versions. You have to use the V4.0 files to do this because the Select files don't provide the SOUND option button when opened in the programmer.

Have fun !
