Digitrax DH126
Posted by TomLutman on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 4:46 PM

I have recently gotten back into the trains after a lengthy lull, and have been trying to dive into dcc. I have a bunch of old brass  steam and a few diesels that I'm trying to get converted. The DH126 is what I was told is replacing the DH123 as the Digitrax economy decoder, and I have used several of them already just for controlling the motor/ lights. I am now looking at getting a diesel converted and want to have the lights and ditchlights . The package says it has FX3 functions, but the directions that come with the chip is somewhat lacking details beyond the front page of capabilities.

Am I correct in saying that the DH126 can operate the 2 ditchlights at the expense of the front and rear headlamps, and the front page is using some creative advertising to make the sale?

You really need to download the decoder manual from Digitrax, that has all the details of each CV. The DH126 has 2 functions. So you cna have front and rear lights, or ditch lights, but not both. FX3 is just the Digitrax name for the various effects - flashing, strobe, flicker, etc., it does nt indicate how many functions the decoder has. Nothing creative in the blurb on the included sheet. It syas 2 functions. There are 2 functions.  If you want to have headlights AND ditch lights you need the DH166, which has 6 functions.

6 series are new, they changed the code to work better with LEDs. Also the BEMF in Sereis 6 is supposed to be better than Series 3. Hopefully they got rid of those two big jumps they old ones had where all the error accumulated. Not worth it to spend money to test them out, I started using TCS years ago and they continue to work great for just a little more money.

SmileGot it. I never knew the designations of the number. I saw the peak currents at 1.5A, which is good for me. I'm somewhat limited on what decoders I grab from the LHS, actually I'm SOL now. I bought the only DZ decoder he had (still need 3) and also cleaned him out of the 126s, and finally his only 123. I'd like to support him even though he is a bit more expensive, but I cannot make 2 trips for a decoder.

I have the Digitrax decoder manual from when I got the Zephyr. I have to muddle my way through some of it, but I can usually manage. Geesh, I even managed to change addresses, v-start, and the other basics, but as far as lighting goes I have not messed with it. I guess for now I will just wire up the diesel with a 9pin plug and run the DH123 until I get what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the help
