digitrax decoders
Posted by dave v on Sunday, March 16, 2014 9:27 PM

Tongue TiedTongue TiedAnyone know what Digitrax sound decoder will work in a Walthers Proto GP-60? Also I have 2 Model power 2-8-2 Mikados that need sound decoders installed. All the units are N-scale And as I am using Digitrax DCC on my layout. I wish to keep using their products. PRICE is also a factor. Any frame modifications I can handle, as I have installed sound decoders in most of my KATO units. Digitrax has a sound decoder for a Kato 2-8-2 Mikado but I'm unfamiliar with that brand of loco. Any help would be welcome

Dave V,

If you would like to look up what is recommended for your Loco's, here is a link to Digitrax Decoder Selections. I did not see a GP60 listed, only a GP20:

I also looked for one in Digitrax decoder selector but none for a GP-60. I wonder if the Atlas GP-20's chassis is simmilar to the walthers Proto GP-60? Also there is a decoder for a KATO 2-8-2 Mikado, also wondering if the Kato and the Model Power are built similar?

I came across this post on another forum for the Walthers GP60.

Just finished installing a Digitrax DN163K2 decoder in this Loco. Had to do a small modification to the frame for the decoder to work. On the rear of this decoder there is a small component/chip on the bottom of decoder board that prevents proper seating. Using a Dremel with a grinding stone I made a small slot that allowed proper seating of the decoder. I did this after disassembling the loco frames. Removed motor. worm and contact strips. Put the two halves back together then ground out for clearance. Cleaned and reassembled. Programed to loco address and ran on layout. No problems a good runner.

Aww, geez, I just realized that he is looking for sound decoders.

So, me and Frank are no help.

Call Digitrax and ask them which sound decoders will fit your locos.

Rich,

That's why I gave him the link, in the first place. I guess he overlooked, the kit they offer. Along with the other info they supply in that link.

Sometimes, a little navigating in a site, is in order. Smile

Rich,

I have been doing Great, except for my darn shoulder. That sucks big time.

I should send you a PM. I have some interesting info, about my friend Brent from the UK, remember his bout with Model Power? I'm going to post it soon, awaiting a e-mail from Him.

Frank Smile

Edit: Now back to the Digitrax hunt! Big Smile

There is no reason to limit yourself to one brand of decoder.  I have a Lenz DCC system, but I run Digitrax, Soundtraxx, TCS and NCE decoders in my locomotives.  All run just fine.  That is the beauty of NMRA standards - all the decoders work with all the DCC systems.  You may be confident that decoders other than Digitrax will work just fine.

If you are price-conscious, though, Digitrax is the best low-cost option for sound decoders.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
