Is this feasible ?

I have an old Walthers turntable that is powered by a small DC motor. If I hook up an equally old MRC  AD310 decoder to it, will it work.  All I am looking for is speed control and f and r.  Thanks

yup, should work fine, just controling another dc motor. as long as, said motor doesnt pull to many amps to blow the decoder

Bruce:

Do an amp test just like you would do if you were adding DCC into a locomotive. If the draw is acceptable then hook the decoder up temporarily to see if it will do what you want. You might have to do a little head scratching to figure out the indexing.

Keep in mind if you use an accessory decoder it's goign to either be stopped or turning at full speed. And there's no reverse.

A better option is to use a motor decoder, and set the speed tables or CV5 if supported to limit how fast the table moves. A speed curve might be good here - make the first quarter or half a really slow speed for jogging the table into final position, and the higher ones something a little faster. This simulates the two speed controls many prottype turntables had, and even if you crank the throttle wide open, it won;t make the little scale engineer and fireman dizzy.

Bruce22,

If you want, you may hook up a DPDT Center off Momentary toggle to it, cheaper than a decoder. If the motor runs at 12volts and is too fast, try running it at 6 volts.

My Motorized double track swing bridge, which is 27'' long, with a 320:1 gear ratio, was too fast at 12volts, I run it at 6volts and it is a perfect speed for that size bridge.

Your Choice!

Frank

Btw: Two center term. on toggle go to bridge motor, power source output go to top two term. on toggle. two bottom term. on toggle are jumper from top two term. but in reverse polarity, for forward and reverse motor power.
