Start up on a Tsunami TSU-1000
Posted by yankee flyer on Friday, January 31, 2014 9:35 AM

Good morning all

I have an SD7 with a TSU-1000 in it.  I am able to get sound without moving the loco by activating the bell but it goes straight to idle without doing a start up. Is there a CV that will make it go through the start up sounds?

As always, thanks for any help.   Bow

Go to the SoundTraxx web site and download their Diesel Technical Reference.

Everything you need to know about Tsunami decoders in contained therein, including detailed explanations of each and every CV.

Unless I've been missing something all these years, Tsunami decoders do not have a shutdown/startup sequence.

NOTE:  I just reviewed the Technical Reference, all 214 CVs, and see nothing about a shutdown/startup sequence being supported.

If having such a feature is really critical to you, you'll have to change to a QSI decoder.

One of the clubmembers has a Galloping Goose with a Tsunami in it.  We have a NCE DCC system.  With that system if you have the Goose stopped and press the controller emergency stop key 1 time, the loco goes through a shutdown sequence.  If at that point you select a function for the loco, like ringing the bell (or maybe by selecting speed step 1 and quickly returning to zero before the loco moves), the Goose engine goes through a start up.   Of course you don't want to press the E stop more than once, because the entire system will shut down.

I'm sure that Digitrax has a similar capability, but I don't know what that is.

Lee,  MY Soundtraxx TSU-GN1000 does a start-up and shut-down sound cycle when I power up the layout.  When I advance the throttle it does a start-up sound, then settles into the idle sound.  I just recently had reason to reset the decoder and the start-up/shutdown cycle is a default setting.  I've been going over the online PDF manuals for the decoder, certainly comprehensive, but for me tedious and complicated.  To my dismay I've found that many aspects of DCC are not user friendly for me, but the manufacturers I've called so far have all been very courteous and helpful.

I have a bunch of the tsunami decoders in my diesel engines and you can set up the start up and shutdown sequences. The tsunami diesel users guide on the Soundtraxx website is an excellent tool to answer most if not all of your questions.

When programming my decoders one preference I have is manual notching using function 9 and 10 on my Digitrax cab. To set up manual notching you have to change CV 116 to 0 then when you put the engine on the track just hit function 9 on the cab and it will start up by pressing function 9 again this will increase throttle up to run notch 2 and then repeat all the way up to run notch 8 if desired. Use function 10 on the cab to decrease throttle and then turn off the locomotive by hitting function 10 after backing the throttle back down to run notch one.

Hope that helps

I have 5 soundtraxx tsunami's [TSU-750, TSU-1000 and (2) AT-1000 that I have installed and 1 factory installed GN-1000] and they all have start up and shut down sequence. They should all start up when track power is applied (unless you have the timeout period enabled). In order to use the shut down sequence you must use a handheld, you cannot use the emergency stop on the command station for this. Someone already used that example and they are using a NCE, this is the same  for a Digitrax command station/controllers.

It almost sounds like CV 113 (Quiet Mode Timeout) is programmed. Try setting CV 113 to 0 (zero) and see what happens.

PennCentral

I am using a Power Cab and  the time out does shut down after several seconds. I kind of like, that it shuts down after a while. That way I don't have 2 or 3 engins ideling away all the time.

I will go through all of the suggestions. Thanks Guys  Thumbs Up

By setting CV113 the Tsunami can mute the sound after a set time duration, but that is not a true shutdown as implemented by QSI and BLI Paragon2 decoders.

With them, the diesel engine is truly shut down; the engineer shuts down other switches, opens the door, then closes and locks the door.  A true shutdown.  Their startup sequence is the opposite; you hear the engineer unlock and open the door, close the door, turn on several switches, then hit the starter button.  The diesel motor then slowly comes back to life at idle speed before the bell, horn, or lights will work.

A few years ago I found out I could hit the E stop once to shut down. Quickly go to speed step 1 and back to 0 to start. Good enough for me. I don't count all the rivets.

I Tsunamis in 3 locos and there is a very easy way to use Start up and Shut down. If track power is applied at any time they will to thru start up sounds. If the red emergency button is pressed, they go thru shut down sounds. So, what to do after track power is applied but you want to go thru those sequences.  Use a great item on the Tsunam called "TRAIN BRAKE" (default F11). Assume that the engine is in running sound mode. Press red emergency. The shut down will occur.  Silence ensues. Press F11.  You will hear air brake release sound. Set throttle to speed step !. That initiates the Start Up sound sequence but the loco won't move. Incidentally, I find that having the throttle in Reverse direction causes start up from the beginning, and Forward just brings up running sound. Remember to move the throttle back to speed step "0" so the loco won't move when you press F11 again to release the Train Brake.  Good luck.

I have tried this myself a number of times and it has never worked. The CV's would read back as what I changed them to, but functions did not change. I had the train brake set up and it worked on F9, it is supposed to be on F11, so I turned it off. Working with Genesis F45 factory Tsunami sound unit

Thanks to all you guys.

I think my biggest problem is, that when I started installing decoders and buying sound equiped locos I didn't stick with one manufacture, now all the locos have a mind of their own.  Sigh
When the power is turned on, the loco in question is silent. Putting it in reverse and turning speed step one on and off causes it to do the start up.  Thats great for now.
I haven't been doing much (as in zilch) with the trains in the last 6 month, need to rekindle the intrest.

I appreciate the help.    Big Smile

Sounds like maybe the dcc world has worked its magic by throwing water on the fires of enthusiasm. Don't let them win this one. DCC is a good idea, the control and sound is really fun when it gets going right. I use several different mfgrs' decoders and all of them play well together with my MRC system. Using a single mfr system really limits one's choices and isn't necessary. Keep plugging away and remember that any decoder can be reset to factory defaults. There isn't much consistency to the instructions and manuals, but they are really just saying the same things. So far dcc is not smarter than I am. I can't say the same for my iphone or hybrid car. Good luck.
