N Scale Bachmann 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain Wire Readout
Posted by gatrhumpy on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 5:36 PM

In Bachmann's N scale 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain, with the wiring harness going from the steam locomotive to the tender (facing the rear of the tender from the locomotive cab), and starting from left to right, what are the six wires for? I.e. which ones are for motor control, lights, and electrical pickup?

This page shows the pin numbers with the wire code. Can you identify pin # 1 ? http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/82511.pdf

Thanks for the drawing, but that's not what I'm asking. I know where the colored wires go to for the DCC decoders. What I'm asking is the wire harness connecting the steam locomotive to the tender, it's supposed to be facing up, as in the drawing. It's a six pin wire harness. What are the wires for? For example, wire #1, looking torwards rear from cab, all the way to left, is left-hand rail pickup (complete guess - probably wrong), wire #2 is...all the way to wire #6 (which is on right side of wire harness.

Not sure about N scale, but in my Bachmann HO steamers, there is a 4-wire harness and a 2-wire harness.

The 2-wire harness is for the pickup wires.

The 4-wire harness is for the motor (2 wires) and the headlight (2 wires).

Yeah I know. I wish they did the same with N scale, but I understand why they didn't. Too little space. I might just have to take the darn thing apart and find out.

Apparently I found the answer here:

http://www.nscale.net/forums/showthread.php?32156-Adding-DCC-to-a-Model-Power-4-6-2&p=353826#post353826

Looking at the rear of the DCC-ready Bachmann tender from the cab, pin 1 will be all the way to the left, pin 2 is next inboard, etc, to pin 6.

Pin 1: Red wire, right rail pickup

Pin 2: Orange wire, motor wire

Pin 3: Light (not sure if + or -)

Pin 4: Light (not sure if + or -)

Pin 5: Grey wire, motor wire

Pin 6: Black wire, left rail pickup.

There you have it folks.

Well, I've decided to try to sell this thing on Jacksonville Craigslist. The tsunami in it took a dump, and does not have motor control in it anymore. Right now it's running on DC after I removed the tsunami.

Why are you selling the loco?

Give us a recap.

Rich, when I took the tsunami DCC decoder out of it, and ran it on straight DC, there was a very slight whirring sound from one of the internal gears. I've tried lubricating it to no avail. I'm not about to lose out on some money by potentially taking this thing apart again. I've tried pressing down on the bearing blocks on the driver wheels, and that didn't help either. The sound went away when I took a very small screwdriver and pressed it against the flat side of the front gear on the second driver wheel. That tells me there is some play on the internal gear between the second and third drivers. The thing was quiet as a darn mouse when that noise went away.

Stinks because I really, really liked that engine. Trying to find another 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain in N scale.

A thought just occurred to me: I wonder if the Heavy Mountain N scale shell will fit the Light Mountain chassis???

http://www.spookshow.net/loco/bachmann482.html

The only think that I can discern from the pictures of the second run Light Mountain with wires going to the tender and the Heavy Mountain chassis is the removable weight on the Light Mountain Chassis and the screw holes on the rear of the Heavy Moountain Chassis. If I could get the Heavy Mountain shell to fit the Light Mountain Chassis, I'll just get a cheap Light Mountain and replace the shell. HMMMMMMMMM

I bought another 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain on eBay for about $100 shipped. Pretty excited. Hopefully this version will not have the quiet growling gear sound like the one I have does.

I got the new 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain. It came to me very quickly. It's quieter than my old one, so that's a plus. It was missing the bell and rear fireman's hand grab rail. I just switch the metal shells. I'm happy. Now I just have to get another tsunami for it.
