Will this work on DC?
Posted by shahomy on Friday, January 3, 2014 12:45 PM

Just got this loco, http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/mnt/mnt389104.htm  it says it has DCC

I set it on a piece of PECO code 83 flex track w/ a 12vdc variable power supply attached, and it did nothing....should it?

A little cheapo 0-4-0 will take off down the track( i only had 1 loco on the piece of track at a time)

Thank you

EDIT: i`ve read a dc loco can run on a dcc track , but can a dcc loco run on just dc?

Am i ever gonna be able to lay any track???

I don't know.  What engine did you actually get?  The link description says that it is an 0-6-0 yard goat w/dcc.  The picture shows a 2-6-6-2 that is definitely not what would be called a yard goat.

The Walthers page doesn't offer much information either.

I just checked the Model Power site and it comes with an MRC sound decoder. Take a look at the site for more info.

A Google search mentions a 3/4 inch speaker. Edit. I think that is for the 0-6-0T.

Most HO steamers with tender have a 28mm speaker in the tender. That is about 1.1 inch.

MRC decoders have been problematic but maybe this is a newer version decoder.

Today decoders are dual mode, DC and DCC. On DC, you have to turn the power pack up higher than with a DC only loco. The decoder takes at least five volts just to wake up. Maybe a couple volts more to begin moving.

I will toss this in here for those who do not know how to Google.

Be advised, the 0-6-0T has only two pickups on the left side drivers. I have the little older version. I had to add a pickup to the third driver.

Thanks for the reply`s.

When i set the loco on the track and it would do nothing, made me think i misinterpreted what i`d read about DCC ready loco`s (that they should run on just DC)...hence, my post...

Well, i tried it again last nite, and i discovered what the problem is!!!...It`s a piece of JUNK!

I set it down on the track, but the tender was off track, derailed( just partially on) and "startup" noises started and it took off down the track, dragging the derailed tender! I had to grab it before it shot off the end of the track and fall off the countertop.

It has 2 pickups(called "contact plates" in parts list) on the tender, both on the same side of the tender...

I put the tender on a piece of 9" track and holding it up and rolling it, while looking at the bottom of the track, i can see these pickups are about a 32nd of an inch from touching the rail !

Where are they supposed to touch? the side of the rail? I`ll try and get a camera tomorrow and upload a pic...really dissapointed.

The only review of the beast at modelpower/mantua says it has bad pickups...this being my first loco since my childhood, i didn`t think much of it, kinda thought they all had occasional pickup problems/dirty track...

As a kid i always blamed it on dirty wheels/track...but now i`m guessing my problems were mostly the rail joiners...

Am i ever gonna be able to lay any track???
