Hello,
I am trying to consist two locomotives. One with a Loksound decoder and the other has a Soundtraxx Tsunami installed.
I figured it would be easier to match the Tsunami to the Loksound since it would be easier to match or so I think?
Would it be easier to match the speed by shutting off the BEMF feature?
If so how do I go about doing so?
Anyone have any suggestions.
Thanks
Since the Loksound decoder has far better motor control, match it to the Tsunami rather than the other way around. Remove any momentum, too.
What DCC system are your using? The system manual should show you how to speed match.
In a nutshell you want get your Tsunami to run as good as you can first by itself then match the Loksound to that. This is done by adjusting CV2 (V-start) and CV5 (V-Max). Once you have the Tsunami just starting to move at speed step 001, match CV2 and CV5 of the Loksound decoder with it. A little back and forth shoving of the couplers isn't a problem.

The best way to do this is with the speed tables. Since the Tsunami does not have CV5, it becomes necessary to match the Loksound top speed to whatever the top speed ends up being for the Tsunami. Depending on the locos in question, you may not be able to get the Loksound loco to run as fast as the Tsunami. And if you ever want to limit the Tsunami top speed to something that you might find more reasonable, you're stuck with the speed tables anyway.
Since loksound fully support CV2, 5, and 6, it's MUCH easier to match the Loksound to the Tsunami, just 3 CVs to set, no messing with speed tables.
I really wish Soundtraxx would update their firmware and support the 3 CVs so you don;t have to keep going to speed tables. JMRI or not, it's still a pain to configure, 30 settings to mess with (28 steps plus the forward and reverse trim) instead of 3. Far as I know all other current production decoders of other brands all support all 3 CVs, Tsunami is the lone holdout. In sound, they are the oldest design still on the market.

Thanks Guys for the input.
For the record I have a Lenz system and use JMRI as well.
I will attempt to match the Loksound to the Tsunami .

As mentioned above, much depends on which loco runs faster at top speed out of the box (at defaults), since the Tsunami does not have CV5 and can't simply be slowed with one tweak if it is the faster loco. I had this situation on my first try with a TCS and a Tsunami, where the Tsunami was faster. It was kinda fun to get it to work, without entering each speed table value. The thread below describes going about it. It involved matching at CV2 min speed, using CV29 to activate the Tsunami speed tables, then setting CV25 for straight line speed table (this prevents having to set each table value), then playing with CV66 & CV95 forward and reverse "trim" to proportionally adjust the Tsunami to slow it down at top speed, then tweaking the TCS CV6 mid-speed to match the Tsunami (at mid-speed) as adjusted. It was essential to download and use the related Tsunami reference materials.

I'll also try to find some links and add them on the general procedure (on Tony's trains) that get into first turning off momentum and handling BEMF, if you have not seen that. See the links within this post.

I have a loksound /tsunami running in a Abba of ft units they are speed matched well using speed tables ,circle a track, jmri decoder pro ...but I had to use this method due to fact I was matching the whole fleet of mixed chassis and decoders incl. oldp2k,new p2k, atlas,Stewart , and QSI,TSUNAMI,NCE,DIGITRAX,LOCKSOUND...
BUT if I was ONLY doing a lok. to a Tsun., I would do as described above ,the loc has great motor control and sounds good BUT as I recall ...
.....Never figured out how to get the sounds synced when BOTH units were given the same address example example= turn on Tsunami turned off loksound then press 8 to turn on lock and of coarse tsunami would mute....now this was out-of-box and never played with settings to solve as they have different addresses now...
But point ,they well run nice together & sound GREAT in same consist as the air pops and secondary sounds play OUT of concert ...Jerry
