Needing help programing CV's
Posted by basementdweller on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 8:41 PM

Hi, while I have the basics of programming decoders this evening I tried digging into programing specific CV's, I don't seem to be able to get the results I am wanting.

My loco is a new HO P2K SD45 with Soundtraxx Tsunami sound. My DCC system is Lenz set 100 with newest 3.6 software.

What I wanted to achieve is manual engine notching. I programed a value of 80 into CV 116.

Value of 80 was as follows: manual notching = 0, Engine interlock = 16, and Dynamic Brake override / engine speed to notch 1 = 64.

Once this is done the instructions say that the engine speed increases on Function 9 and decrease on Function 10, this is in place of radiator fans and air compressor on those functions.

The problem is that on my loco Function 9 is brake squeal and function 10 is coupler sound. Once CV 116 is programmed I can not get the manual notching to work on Functions 9 & 10 or any other function for that matter. I tried all 28 functions.

I tried eliminating the dynamic brake override  and the engine interlock and just programmed a value of 0 for CV 116, still no manual notching.

For now I reset CV 116 to 39 which was its default setting and I am back on auto engine speed. I appreciate any guidance to get manual notching for this loco.

Thank you.

Is this a factory decoder or did you install yourself?  If factory look for the paperwork listing the functions. I think on some factory decoders, the functions are not the same as the after market ones. There should be paper work listing the functions for each F key. You may have to swap the function keys around. Read the decoder manual to see how to swap function keys. .  Joe

Basementdweller,

I faced the same situation with my shiny new Athearn GP7.  I suggest you do as I did and call Soundtraxx technical support.  The phone number is 888-789-7637.  This programming is the most complicated I have attempted, and Soundtraxx's help was invaluable.  You'll be glad you did.

The decoder is factory installed, I have the paperwork that came with the loco that explains what each function does. That info conflicts with the Tsunami programming info that I printed from Soundtraxx website specific for that loco.

Thanks for the contact info Wilton.

Standard Tsunami function mapping...

F9--CV43=8  for rad. fans or  RPM+

F10--CV44=32  for compressor or RPM-

Then...CV116=16  for manual notching & interlock.(+ optional automatic RPM control if desired, add to CV)

Then...CV112=3  to set automatic fan & compressor operation (random).

I have five units set this way, they all run great on my Digitrax system.

Basementdweller,

My point exactly - different locomotive manufacturers likely assign different CV protocols.  The one thing all factory-installed Tsunamis have in common is Soundtraxx.  I believe the techs there will know more about how to accomplish what you are seeking to do, than anyone else.  The retail or user-installed versions differ in their attributes from the decoders that are factory-installed, but the factory-installed products are made (and probably initally programmed) by Soundtraxx.  They knew right away which CVs to program on my Athearn (factory-installed version), when I mentioned the brand name.  I still feel they are your best resource.  Let us know if you are successful.

Just wanted to follow up and say that Soundtraxx replied to my email with the required CV settings to achieve what I wanted. Everything now works great, love the manual notching.

Soundtraxx said in their email Walther's locomotives have a unique function map that needs changed to operate like the after market decoders.

Thanks for everyone's help.

This will achieve manual engine notching, dynamic brakes override to drop engine to idle, manual brake control. Radiator fans and compressor on auto.

Here are the CV's.

CV43 - 8

CV44 - 32

CV45 - 64

CV46 - 128

CV 116 - 80

CV112 - 3

For F11 braking - CV3 - 25, CV4 - 50, CV61 - 153 These can be adjusted to your liking.

Sorry for not doing this sooner.

Martin.

Thanks Martin. This info will be of interest and value to a lot of us with locos with OEM Tsunami decoders.
