DCC basics - need info source
Posted by theodorefisk on Saturday, October 19, 2013 9:53 PM

I would like to know where I might find a source of information on DCC to learn about it. I know nothing about electronics, but want to learn the basics. Please let me know and thank you.

Ted,

I found this site very helpful and informative when I entered the world of DCC:   http://www.wiringfordcc.com

Why do you want to know about it?   You don't need to know how a car works to drive.  Is there something specific about it you find interesting and want to research.  Seems everyone wants to make it out to be something that is difficult and hard.

The basics are: Hook two wires from the DCC system to the track.  Put a DCC locomotive on the track.  Dial up channel 3 on the throttle.   Run the train.

The next more complicated thing is to set the locomotive to a different channel number.  That process is dependent on the specific DCC system you are using, and will be in the owners manual.

It only gets more complicated if you have a really big layout, are installing the decoders in locomotives yourself, or are wanting to do advanced things like speed curving, consists, momentum and the  like.

A good source of basic information about what DCC is and how it works is a document called "DCC For Beginners" on Tony's Trains web site.  When you enter his site, a link to it should be near the top of the home page.  You can read it online or download it and read it with Adobe Acrobat.

You may find this web site useful http://dccwiki.com/tutorial . If you are new, welcome to model railroading!

When I first read this post...it was a...RIGHT ON!  I'm ready to learn too.

I've been in the hobby for 43 years and am very advanced in most ways other than DCC. My local hobby dealer has sold me on going to DCC. For me it will be a slow change over since I have better than 55 locomotives to set up with decoders and/or sound decoders. I am electronics experienced.

It's so odd...in other than a few things, everyone seems to beat me to the punch. LOL!

I'll begin the change after the beginning of the new year

DCC for Beginners on Tony's Trains web site is a lot more useful than the DCC Wiki "tutorial".

As for the Wiring for DCC link, that is a pretty advanced web site and not for beginners.

Ted.

 Try this.

http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/nswmn2/DCC.htm

Another one is DCC university from Lichfield Station.

http://www.mrdccu.com/

Be leery of sites that allow editing by anyone and the original author. Much false information can appear. Books can take too long from thought through printing to miss some latest information and new products.
