I have a couple of Kato SD90 here and I want to put decoders in them.
Advice on what decoder needed.
If you just want just motion and lights, Id probably go with an 8pin plug like a Digitrax DH123. Plug n play. Cheap and easy.
If you want sound as well, the Soundtraxx Tsunami KT1000. Board replacement, LEDs are included on the board. Drop in/board replacement. Or you could do an ESU/LokSound Select. They have 8 pin types or board replacement types. See their website.
These are for HO and there are plenty of other options from other manufacturers including NCE, TCS, and others. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. Forgot to say that I wanted them for HO
Sounds like the Digitrax DH123 are for me - cheap and easy
Thanks again
I found this January thread useful on people's thoughts on various decoders.

I have a Kato RS2 DC version that I acquired and wanted to go DCC with it, but without sound (I consist it with a Genesis sound GP9). I chose a TCS decoder and was impressed with it, but don't have the experience to argue one versus another.

The SoundTraxx MC2 series of (non-sound) motor and light control decoders are also a good choice for Kato or other models with the NMRA 8-pin socket in them.
For a non-sound decoder, I'd go with the TCS over the Digi-Trax. Seems I'm constantly reading posts about people having trouble with their Digi-Trax decoders .... don't hear nearly as much trouble with the TCS ones.
