Genesis GP9R with Soundtraxx Tsunami
Posted by spfan01 on Sunday, March 10, 2013 3:37 PM

One of my new GP9 locos has developed a problem whereby the sound works perfectly (engine sounds, horn, bell, etc.), but the motor won't run. I've tried resetting everything to factory defaults, but I can't get the loco to move. I have a lot of sound locos, but this is the first time I've encountered this problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix it, short of sending the locomotive to Athearn?  Thanks.

Sounds as if there is a mechanical problem. Remove the shell and see if you can turn the flywheels with your fingers.

To consider the easy things first, make sure the brakes aren't on.   F11 is the function key for aftermarket chipsets--you'll have to check your manual for the Genesis OEM version.    Sometimes a function key gets stuck.

The OP has already done a 'reset' on the decoder - So doing an F11  may be of no use.  Either the motor driver circuitry in the decoder is fried, or the motor and/or it's connections are the issue.  If you do not want to take the shell off to check the motor and connections - The sending it to Athearn is the best course of action.

I had this  very thing happen.  Problem is that CVs don't reset function buttons.  When they are stuck.
