Android and JMRI?
Posted by locoi1sa on Saturday, February 23, 2013 3:27 PM

   Hi guys.

My laptop is going on 10 years old now and I feel it is on borrowed time. I was looking at these inexpensive little netbooks for under a hundred dollars but they all have the android operating system. Can JMRI run on an android system netbook? How about Lokprogrammer software?

     Thanks.

JMRI cannot run on them, but you CAN do things like the Engine Driver application to use the Android device as a throttle, and use the web browser to access JMRI panels - there's a web server in it to remotely control things.

Lokprogrammer also needs a Windows PC. JMRI doesn;t need Windows - you can save a bundle by getting a machine with Linux, and JMRI will work fine, but Lokprogrammer is a Windows app. I haven't tried doing something like a virtual machine to run Lokprogrammer, since my dedicated railroad computer is a Linux box, but I have my Windows desktop and laptop to run Lokprogrammer.

   Thanks Randy.

I figured as much. Just kicking the idea and I kicked it into the can. I can't believe the difference in costs over a windows netbook compared to the android. For the price difference I might as well get another laptop with a DVD drive and more features. Crazy doings in the computing prices. Toshiba sends me offers all the time. The latest is a Satellite similar to mine with twice the memory for $245. This looks like the route I am going to take.

           Thanks again.

The hardware has to be capable of running JAVA.  If you can't run JAVA (the J in JMRI) you are out of luck.

Just look around for a used laptop or desktop and go from there.  Very low cost solution, as long as it can run a current version of JAVA you are in luck. You can even install JMRI on a Linux box, which is another way to bring new life to old hardware.
