Walther's 130 ft DCC Turntable Question
Posted by Curt Webb on Sunday, November 11, 2012 12:29 PM

Hi All,

I have a Walther's 130 ft DCC Turntable (the new one) that has been installed for about 6 months. I control it by the provided controller box. Today for some reason all the track indexed positions are gone (except the factory programed track 1 & 2). I have tried recalibrating and cycled power several times with no change.

I had some  issues programming the indexed track positions initially but finally got it done. I tend to get overwhelmed controlling things on my Digitrax DT-402D throttle which is the reason I use the provided box controller.

My question is- Is there a way to manually move the bridge with the box controller to a desired position without having to program specific track position?

I appreciate any help I can get in this matter.

Short answer:  yes.  Just leave it at the factory settings.  Press either the clockwise or counter clockwise (will our children of the digital age even know what these terms mean?) buttons and continue pressing it until the bridge gets to where you want it.  It can be a bit tricky to get it aligned just right but with practice it's not too bad.

I learned this because my indexing kept shifting a few 32nds of an inch, causing derailments.  With nine roundhouse/garden tracks and three lead in tracks, it was a PITA to keep re-programming it so I went to manual mode.  Note:  I have the 90' TT but I believe the control mechanisms and electronics are the same.

Good luck!

Skagitrailbird- Thanks for the answer. After reading your response I went and experimented. It looks like the 130 ft TT has to be in program mode but then you can move the bridge to any position you want to. My large steamers actually run smoother on and off the bridge positioning it manually. I am back to being a happy camper. Thank you for your help.

Hmmm....I have the 90' model, six years now.  I did programme my indexed positions, and occasionally there is the odd glitch.  I lift the bridge carefully and set it down at the correct position, power down, power up, and the next press of the direction button takes the bridge to the correct programmed position.

However, my turntable can be started and stopped manually in regular use, and not necessarily in program mode.  I used it that way for the rustedl radial track running across the road in this photo.  All other radials tracks to bays, and the lead to the left lined with the bridge, are programmed.

The reason I didn't programme the stop for the right hand rusty radial is because it was too close to the optical reference eye, according to the instructions.  I didn't even try...just went 'manual'.

I have the older Walthers Cornerstone 130' turntable.  I long ago gave up on the automatic indexing feature and just operate the turntable manually without the indexing feature.  I hold my finger on the button on the cntrol panel until the bridge reaches the desired position.  That is nearly foolproof, and it works just fine for me.

I to have the older Walthers Cornerstone 130' turntable, I have not long ago decided to install on my layout,  I also have given up trying to program it, I can set the program only on one of the TT, when I turn the power off and then turn back on I have lost the settings.

I have been emailing Walthers customer service for assistance with no solutions?

A few weeks ago I posted a similar "HELP!" message on the Layout Forum under the title "Lost Indexing."  The conslusion reached by several respondents, later confirmed by Walthers, was that the control electronics are defective.  Walthers has agreed to replace the controls with the upgraded DCC version at no charge.  I recommend you call Walthers customer service. I understand Dennis is the TT expert but I spoke with Daniel who was very helpful.

Good luck!

Thanks you Roger for you suggestion, I certainly will contact Dennis again, ( I have been corresponding with him by email), and I will make reference to your result obtaining a replacement controller and see if he makes me the same offer. Most people don't spend over $250 for something that doesn't do what it was designed to or you expected to do.

Thanks again

John.

I have been in contact with Walthers Parts and Warranty department (Dennis), he informed me he was not aware that there is an apparent problems with the Walthers TT. I also spoke with he at length by phone he gave me some ideas to try, they haven't solved the problem. He did offer the test the bridge and control box if I send it back but due to shipping cost to and from Australia and the States, I think I may do what most others having with or similar issues, just forget about programming and operate manually. This is not really the optimum solution given that I thought Walthers products were of the best possible quality available.
