Hi,I searched the forum for information about a sound decoder for Genset. Some of you successfully installed the MRC decoder made especially for this model.
I am little confused because all post here concern item No 0001906. The only item which I found on MRC web page is 0001916.http://www.modelrectifier.com/search/product-view.asp?ID=13021Item # 0001916 Price: $110.98 New item soon to be released
Is this the same decoder or a new one? Item is described as a new but I am sure that 0001906 decoder is a quite long time on the market. So maybe it is a new version. Is it possible to buy it? Has already someone installed it ?
Maybe there are new decoders for this model? I didn't found any other products (QSI, Tsunami). Only some offers from firms which can install decoders (for example Ligar Technologies)
FYI: The MRC decoder is NOT a true representation of a Genset. No one makes a sound decoder that accurately portrays the Genset's sounds.
This question has come up before and the general belief is that the MRC decoder is using a regular diesel engine's sound set.
Here is a link to the Soundtraxx chip for the Cummins engine used in small GE switchers. They're VERY similar to the Cummins diesels used in Gensets today. It will not however give you the 2 or 3 multiple engines which come online and shut down at different load levels. I do not know if the MRC chipset has the ability to synchronize 2 of 3 engines--I know it is something a few companies are working on.

I would call MRC and get clarification since there is so much misinformation on the internet. Or speak with a knowledgeable person at your LHS.

Interesting,
I have the MRC 0001906 sound decoder installed in my Atlas genset. It has the same 'specs' as the new 0001916, but costs a lot less! The sounds available may not be exact, but they are not too bad, and they do cycle up as the throttle is advanced, and the sound goes into sleep mode after a few minutes, then does some power ups every few minutes. I was really concerned about using an MRC decoder, but it was the only game in town last year. It has been installed for about a year and just finished a 3 hour run on the Prairie Lakes Division display layout last week-end.
The 'install' is tedious as everything is pre-wired and getting it all in that engine and not pinching wires a chore. I spent 2 evening getting it installed. There is a 3 part YouTube video on installing it - I would search them out and watch - it was very helpful!
