I just downloaded JMRI to play with it on my Windows 7 desktop. When I go to open any of the programs (decoder pro, panel pro...), nothing shows up. I looked in the task manager, and it shows that two processes start, one is called LanchJMRI.exe, the other is windows problem reporting. I have no idea how to fix this. I have Java 6. Could it be because I don't have my layout connector plugged in?

First thing you shoudl get is the preferencese selection, you cna pick one fo the simulators if you don't have an actual connection.
Do you have 64 bit Windows 7? You probably need to install Java Runtime twice. If you just used your browser to go to the Java site and installed that way - that only gets the 32 bit, sinc eby default even 64 bit windows uses the 32 bit version of IE. You cna download the offline installer and install that.

Microsoft's web site has a "XP Compatibility Mode" add-on that you may need to download if JMRI doesn't work with Windows 7 64-bit version.
Nah, it works perfectly fine, I have 64-bit Win 7 on my desktop and laptop and JMRI runs great on both.
Thanks for the input. I do have 64 bit Windows, so I installed the 64 bit java, but to no avail. I still don't get a single window. If I go to program files and click on LaunchJRMI.exe, it gives me the error that no argument was given, so I know that the exe is opening. I will continue to try.
I'm running it on Windows 7 / 64 with no problems either. It is most likely a Java issue. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling Java. That's why I don't like Java based apps.

Just did that. Uninstalled all Java versions, uninstalled JMRI, restarted, installed Java 32 bit, installed Java 64, installed JMRI 3.0 production release. Same problem, no window.
You don't need the 64-bit version of Java for JMRI, even if you have the 64-bit version of Windows. Both of the Win7 64-bit machines I run JMRI on have only the 32-bit version of Java installed. They've never even seen the 64-bit Java version, and JMRI runs fine on both of them.
Anyway, the JMRI install includes an "Install Test". It's located under JMRI->Tools and Demos. I suggest you run that and see what it tells you.
I'd also suggest that you join the JMRI Yahoo! group and ask your JMRI questions there. No offense to this Forum, but the folks who actually write the JMRI code hang out on that list and can give you expert advice.
But before you post there, go to the Files section, and under "Administrative files" you'll find a document titled "How to ask questions". Follow that, and you'll be able to gather and post the information needed to more quickly determine and correct whatever your issue may be.

Dumb question WW Train, do you have a interfaces like a Digitrax PR3? Reason I ask is you stated "To Play With It". I cannot open Decoder Pro unless I have my PR3 plugged into the computer.

Really? Mine just throws a pop-up saying the PR3 on COMx cannot be found, and when I dismiss that pop-up, JMRI finishes initializing.
Also, you can start JMRI without the actual interface being connected, and not get the error pop-up either, as long as you select the correct simulator connection.
Yes, it has for many versions, maybe always, it's ahrd to reemember that long ago, if the previously selected interface is not present, you get the Preferences screen to pick another one.
ANother option, JMRI installer tries to load Java if not found, so perhaps uninstallign all Java and letting JMRI install it. If you are getting the latest Java from the Java site - that might also be a problem, try getting a 1.6.x version (Java versioning is just as screwy as the language itself, they would call that Version 6, Update X, while sane peopel in the programmig world woudl call that version 1, revision 6, but I digress). The Java 7 releases have been since Oracle took over and they really made some major changes that have been known to mess up programs. JMRI 3.0 requires a Java 6 version, but may have issues with Java 7.
I clicked on the Install test under tools and demos on the start menu and it said:
Windows is searching for InstallTest.bat. To locate the file yourself, click browse.

OK, I uninstalled Java and JMRI again and just tried installing JMRI. I clicked yes when it asked to install JAVA, and then said Failure installing JAVA, please download manually. I think I will quit trying because I can't connect this computer to the layout anyway because it is in a different room. I will try installing JRMI when I get a laptop. Thanks for your help.

Did both of those. Neither helped. Also tried applying compatibility settings, didn't help either. I have had a few other problems installing programs on this pc before, so I won't worry about it. Thanks for the help.
How old is your PC? Maybe you don't have enough RAM installed in it.

I have no problem with that. PC's 2 years old. It has 8 GB ram. I have had several issues with it before , however, that I am contributing to a upgrade I did from Vista to 7.
That could well be it, if there have been other problems in the past. That's one upgrade I've never attempted, all my WIndows 7 installs are fresh installs. My PC is about that old, no issues. My laptop is more like 5 years old, and it all works fine - with a clean install. All 64-bit, I have yet to find anything that won't run, plus I can use all the memory. I see no point in installign a 32 bit OS anymore unless there is a specific compatibility issue, or youhave less than 4GB RAM.
I never upgrade operating systems. It sends you to driver hell. All the peripherals that I have accumulated over the years suddenly need new drivers...if they are even available.

If you are having a problem downloading JMRI onto your computer, the place to go to get an answer is to the JMRI Yahoo group. I'm not sure what you mean by trouble to create an account. It costs nothing to join, and if I remember correctly it was not that long or painful a process.
Regarding the fact that you cannot connect your computer to the layout, what might that have to do with anything? I have a version of JMRI on this computer and it is not connected to the layout. The program has a simulator option where you can play around with it a little and your computer does not need to be connected to any layout.
My version is not hooked up to my layout. It is installed on a 7 year old lap top. And I found it indespinsable when I started to replace my older decoders with Tsunami sound decoders.
It was well worth the little effort to set it up.
