Proto 2000 GP7 Phase II locomotive
Posted by Burbank Bill on Saturday, May 19, 2012 2:36 PM

Hello;

I have a Proto 2000 GP7 that has a Q1a sound decoder installed and I have been trying to figure out how to program the Mars light. I know it has to do with CV49 and 50 but I cant get it to work. Please tell me this loco has this function, It is in the manual as being available. Any help would be appreaciated.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say “I'm trying to figure out how to program the function.” Does that mean that you don't understand what the manual is telling you to do, or does it mean that you aren't using the manual and you are trying to figure it out by guessing?

Most locomotives that come with sound decoders installed don't come with the full manual but just a simple instruction sheet that doesn't contain all the information about the decoder. If you don't have the full manual, go on-line to the decoders manufacturers web site and download it.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.

(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.

Hello;

I found the full manual online and read how to change the lights but I get no responce in the loco. Is there something that needs to be enabled to change the lights. I have not come across it in the manual. I did find out that the function output numbers do not corespond with the Digitax keyborad. I had N scale locos that I had no problem getting the strobe to come on. I know I am missing something.

The Walthers description of these models does not mention a mars light, so it's possible they don't have one.

It is possible as Bill said, that this function is not available in that decoder.  Loco manufacturers don't usually install full function decoders, but some simpler version that they can get cheaper from the manufacturer.

Acording to the manual there is a cv that will tell you if a certain cv is used in the decoder. Just read that and will try it after work.
