Got the difference down on IR vs Radio on Digitrax throttles but am still looking for the difference of simplex vs duples on the 402s Thanks Much
To add to Davids fine reply above.
Simplex has to be pointed as like a tv remote and teathered into the reciever to make additions.
Duplex can be pointed anywhere and doe not have to be pointed at the reciever, mine is just the zepher with the duplex added on and in my personal openion, well worth the bang for the buck over simplex. if you find a tv remote flustrating at all, go with duplex.
Simplex radio does not have to be pointed at the receiver, only infrared does.
The 402D vs 402R for us has also been an issue of reliability of signal. The 402D does not acquire/dispatch, change speed or operate functions as reliably. Both have been in for repair. For this reason, sometimes we end up having to plug the 402D in anyway. I can't remember, but if the 402D could be used wireless for ops or svc mode programming, I wouldn't. Signal strength is not a problem for our layout size.
BTW, we use a laptop with Decoder Pro for programming and extra throttles on occasion, through a LocoBuffer USB.

That is not true. You have confused simplex with IR.

Simplex is a one way road. Cars go in only one direction.
Duplex is a two way road. Cars can go in both directions.
