QDQ- Quick Dumb Question on diesel repowering
Posted by cedarwoodron on Sunday, January 22, 2012 4:52 PM
Help! The original bad motor had it's leads oriented towards the long end of the hood. The original wiring had the negative wire ( AHM white ) attached to the top lead of that motor. I reversed the motor direction, with the leads now pointing towards the cab/ short end of the hood. Does that change the forward/reverse aspect of the power train? Should I now invert the motor, so the spent top lead, pointed in the opposite direction, is on the bottom? Cedarwoodron

Yes, if you changed the polarity of the motor, the fwd/rev will be changed. NMRA convention is right rail positive, the loco moves forward. Foward on a diesel depends on a lot of things, for a hood unit. Some roads ran them long hood forward, some short hood forward. It's kind of obvious on a steam loco (except cab forwards - but then the name tells you the orientation). Right rail is the engineer's side, with the engineer facing forward.
