MTH SD70ACe sound problems
Posted by johngriffey18ca1 on Saturday, January 7, 2012 10:42 AM

I received another MTH SD70ace yesterday and the sound does not work even when I hit F3.  So I did a factory reset and I was able to then press F3 and get sounds to work.  HOWEVER, when I shut down the track power and power it back on, it doesn't work again.  Another factory reset and it works.  Any suggestions as to what's going on here?  I would hate to have to do a factory reset every time I want to run the locomotive.  I've tried programming the road number in and it also only remembers that info until the track power is shut off.

Take it back and get a replacement -- the electronics in it are obviously faulty.

Hi John,

It sounds like your engine has a bad ultra capacitor.  The ultra cap works like a small battery.  Each time a PS3 engine is powered down it writes its current state to memory, including volume settings and ID.  If the ultra cap isn't working there's no power write the state to memory and the engine reverts to the settings it had the last time the ultra cap was working.

Call MTH service at 410-381-2580 between noon and 5pm ET M-F.  Tell them what is happening and that you suspect the capacitor is bad.  They'll give you an RA number and the address for MTH service.  Assuming you purchased the engine new, send a copy of the receipt and they'll fix it under warranty.

I recommend you also to send them back. Thereseem to be an error in the eutectic system appears.

I also own three SD70ACe's from the first (1),second (2) and third (3) series. Without which theyhave any problems, do not.

DCC system: Uhlenbrock IB II, DT402 & DT402D, Power: Fleischmann MSF - Transformer 6755

DCC system: Uhlenbrock IB II, DT402 & DT402D, Power: Fleischmann MSF - Trafo 6755
